WHERE ARE THE WORLD’S 25 LARGEST SHOPPING MALLS?
Although super-regional shopping malls first emerged in North America during the mid-20th century, this quintessentially western form of consumerism now expands most rapidly in emerging economies of the Global South. As recently noted by SYED BALKHI in Visual News, “… countries that not long ago lacked even grocery stores are now building shopping facilities so big that they can’t even find enough vendors to fill them.” In fact, the list of the world’s 25 largest shopping malls now includes only four from North America (three in the USA and one in Canada), while the rest are located mainly in East Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. As far as shopping malls go, it appears to be a case of the students surpassing their teacher! Given how malls tend to hurt central cities and encourage suburban sprawl, however, this trend may not be entirely beneficial. Check out the full list of the world’s 25 largest shopping malls here.
